Kratom is the common name attributed to the deciduous tree, Mitragyna speciosa, a plant in the coffee family. Kratom contains approximately 50 unique alkaloids. Mitragynine, the most abundant alkaloid, comprises 51-82% of the total alkaloid composition.
Kratom leaves have a long history of use in Southeast Asia where it is consumed as teas, infusions, decoctions and foodstuffs. Traditionally consumed for its mild stimulant and analgesic properties, today kratom leaves are reportedly used to increase energy, improve mood, reduce stress and alleviate minor aches and pains associated with physical exertion.
